ACCURA™ V.92 Modems Shipping
External and Internal Models
Comply with New International Modem Standards Boston,
MA, January 2, 2001 — Hayes ACCURA V.92 Modems are
now shipping. The new Hayes brand internal PCI and external
serial port modems are among the first to support the new
V.92 / V.44 international standards for dial-up modems.
The Hayes ACCURA V.92 PCI Model HO8-15357 is a Windows-only
internal modem with built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor).
The Hayes ACCURA V.92 RS-232 Model HO8-15328 external features
both an on-board DSP and Controller. The new Hayes external
plugs into a computer's serial port and is compatible with
Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems. The
newly adopted ITU V.92 modem standard and its companion V.44
compression standard enhance Internet communications, offering
multiple advantages over the older V.90 / V.42bis standard.
The most apparent improvement for most users will be the dramatic
increase in Web browsing speed provided by the V.44 compression
standard. The older V.42bis compression standard was developed
over ten years ago, before the widespread use of graphic images
on the World Wide Web. The new V.44 compression standard was
designed specifically for the graphics-heavy content seen
on the Web today and can double the speed of Web file downloads.
The V.92 data standard offers several additional advantages
including QuickConnect, faster upstream data transfers, and
support for call waiting:
- QuickConnect can cut the negotiation or "handshake"
time at the beginning of a call in half.
- The V.92 standard increases the maximum data upload speed
more than 40 percent—from 33,600 bps to 48,000.
- The V.92 Modem-on-Hold feature enhances telephone Call
Waiting service by allowing a user to receive a voice call
while online, put the online session on hold during the
call, and then resume the online session. This feature is
especially convenient in households with a single phone
line. Besides a local telephone company's Call Waiting service,
Modem-on-Hold requires compatible service from the user's
ISP (Internet Service Provider).
V.92 service is expected to be available from ISPs in early
2001. The new Hayes V.92 modems are fully compatible with
the present V.90 standard and will automatically connect with
a central site using either V.90 or V.92. About
