Zoom®
Ships Affordable, Versatile V.92 USB Modem
Compact modem offers enhanced
Internet performance and WorldTraveler™ feature
Boston, MA, May 7, 2001 — Zoom Telephonics, Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM)
has begun shipment of an affordably priced, compact V.92 modem
for Windows computers with a USB port. The new Zoom/Modem
V.92 USB Mini, Model 3090, is the latest in Zoom's extensive
line of V.92 modems. Zoom was the first manufacturer to ship
products meeting the new ITU V.92 and V.44 standards for modems.
Features of the Zoom/Modem V.92 USB Mini Model 3090
include an on-board DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for improved
performance, four LED status lights, and easy upgrades using
software downloads. Like all Zoom modems, the Model
3090 includes ZoomGuard™ lightning protection. ZoomGuard
is an advanced circuit that protects the computer and the
modem from lightning striking the telephone line. Lightning
strikes are the leading cause of modem failure. ZoomGuard
provides more resilient and robust lightning protection than
the varistor and sidactor solutions commonly found on competing
modems. The Model 3090 also includes Zoom's World
Traveler™ feature, which is a programmable telephone
network interface. Model 3090 can be easily programmed for
telephone networks in over 185 countries by using a software
utility provided with the modem. The Model 3090 is
housed in a compact 2 3⁄4 x 5 x 3⁄4-inch case;
and is powered by the USB port of the computer, which eliminates
the need for an external power supply. The modem's small size,
USB port power, and Zoom World Traveler feature make the new
Zoom modem an ideal travel companion suitable for both desktop
and laptop portable computers. The Model 3090 supports
the new ITU V.92 and companion V.44 standards for modems.
This technology speeds up Web browsing, file uploads, and
connect times. V.92 includes a Modem-on-Hold feature that,
in conjunction with a phone company's Call Waiting service,
allows a user to receive a voice call without losing a live
Internet connection. The enhanced performance features of
Zoom's new V.92 modems are available to subscribers of Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) who have upgraded to the new standards.
For those users whose ISPs have yet to upgrade, Zoom's V.92
modems are fully compatible with the older V.90 modem standard.
"Despite the rapid growth of broadband technology,
dial-up modems will continue to be the most popular means
of Internet access for many years," said Terry Manning,
Zoom's Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. "The new
Model 3090 represents our continuing commitment to providing
value-priced, performance-rich products to high-volume markets."
Software bundled with the Model 3090 includes hardware
drivers and utilities, 01 Communique Laboratories' Communicate!
fax/data communications program, Internet access software,
JASC Software's Paint Shop Pro™ SE graphics editing
program, AdSubtract™ privacy protection and banner blocking
software, and other useful programs. The estimated
retail price of the Zoom/Modem V.92 USB Mini Model 3090 is
$69.00. About Zoom Telephonics Zoom
