Zoom
Ships Industry's Best, Simplest, and Safest Wireless Gateway
Breakthrough security and software
for home and small business networks
Boston, MA, December 20, 2001 — Zoom Telephonics,
Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOOM)
has begun shipping the ZoomAir Model 4165, an Internet Gateway
that supports both wired and wireless networking to deliver
sophisticated network solutions through an easy-to-use interface.
The Internet Gateway allows multiple computers to simultaneously
access a single cable, DSL or dial-up Internet connection
and to share files and other network resources. Distinctive
features of the Model 4165 include advanced firewall security,
Zoom's unique SmartStart™ installation software, more
extensive support for WEP encryption using plain language
passwords, and a printer sharing port.
A comparison
of the ZoomAir 4165 to popular products from Orinoco, Linksys
and Cisco shows the Zoom product has the best features.

Wireless 802.11b networking provides high speed for
broadband Internet access and eliminates the need to run wires.
However, software configuration of wireless networks has been
difficult. With Zoom's SmartStart software, even an inexperienced
user can easily configure their network by answering easily
understood questions about how the network is to be used.
Unlike the setup procedures of competing products, no network
knowledge is required. The 4165 offers advanced security
features in addition to the basic NAT firewall offered by
most gateways. The 4165 provides MAC address filtering, Packet
Filtering, Stateful Packet Inspection, Demilitarized Zone
(DMZ), and Port Redirection. The Zoom Internet Gateway
supports up to 253 users. Ports on the Gateway include a broadband
Ethernet port, a serial interface for connection of an analog
or ISDN modem, two 10/100 Ethernet ports for wired LAN connections,
and a parallel printer port. The estimated retail
price of the ZoomAir Internet Gateway Model 4165 is $199 after
a $30 rebate. "Homes and small businesses with
broadband connections need powerful networking solutions that
they can install easily. At the same time, they must guard
against the danger of malicious hacker attacks", said
Frank Manning, President and CEO of Zoom Telephonics. "The
Model 4165 does a great job of hiding the complexities of
wired and wireless networking and sophisticated firewall protection
behind an intuitive easy-to-use interface." Configuration
and management of the model 4165 is done through any PC on
the LAN using a WEB browser and password authorization.
