Zoom Beats U.S. Robotics with Broad V.80 Video SupportU.S.
Robotics Sportster and Courier Owners:"I Could Have Had
a V.80" Boston, MA, February
2, 1998 - Zoom Telephonics today announced that it offers
a broad-based product line that supports the V.80 standard
required for H.324 point-to-point video telephony, unlike
3Com's U.S. Robotics® Sportster® and Courier™
modems. As of January 1998 all Zoom shipments of V.34
or 56K internal or external North American modems include
V.80. Zoom's international products are scheduled to support
V.80 with an easy software download no later than the second
quarter of 1998. The vast majority of U.S. Robotics
modems do not currently support V.80. "This creates
a problem for 3Com's U.S. Robotics in both the retail and
OEM channels," said Frank Manning, Zoom's President and
CEO. "The smart modem or PC buyer will be looking for
modems that support video properly. The vast majority of Zoom's
do; and the vast majority of USR's do not." "Zoom
is making a major commitment to modem-enabled video, and V.80
support is an important part of this commitment," said
Terry Manning, Zoom's Vice President of Marketing and Sales.
"We recently began shipping the Zoom/Video™ Cam
and the Zoom/Faxmodem™ 56Kv with built-in video capture.
This month CompUSA® will introduce a low-cost, single-slot
faxmodem/camera bundle called the Zoom/Video Cam plus 56K.
In 1998 Zoom plans to ship a broad line of video cameras and
video capture cards. We believe the time is right for this
product category, given faster modems, more powerful personal
computers, and great new software for video telephony, video
conferencing, video mail, and image capture."
Zoom Telephonics designs, produces, and markets faxmodems,
ISDN products, and other products that link people and their
personal computers through the world's largest network, the
international telephone network, and connected networks including
the Internet and corporate local area networks. Zoom products
are produced in Boston, Massachusetts and sold worldwide.
Zoom Telephonics is publicly traded on Nasdaq (NASDAQ: ZOOM).
